This is a very amusing story about a family who live in Seattle. The father works for Microsoft, the mother does not work but has a mysterious past, and the teenaged daughter is quite brilliant. The family decides to vacation in Antarctica, but days before the departure the mother, Bernadette, disappears, thus the title. Funny situations occur when the nosy neighbour wants to uproot the blackberry bushes that migrate from Bernadette’s sprawling house, when Bernadette rants about the way Canadians are so very polite, and when she rants about Seattle people and their way of life, she being a New Yorker. All in all, a fun summer read.
