Where’d you go, Bernadette : a novel

This is a very amusing story about a family who live in Seattle. The father works for Microsoft, the mother does not work but has a mysterious past, and the teenaged daughter is quite brilliant. The family decides to vacation in Antarctica, but days before the departure the mother, Bernadette, disappears, thus the title. Funny situations occur when the nosy neighbour wants to uproot the blackberry bushes that migrate from Bernadette’s sprawling house, when Bernadette rants about the way Canadians are so very polite, and when she rants about Seattle people and their way of life, she being a New Yorker. All in all, a fun summer read.

This book was so much fun to read! From the first sentence, the author reels you in. Tess Drake, a spunky and sexy thirty-six year-old, has been working for the same London talent agency for ten years but now wants to go out on her own and open her own agency. When her boss dies in strange circumstances, Tess sees her opportunity and plans to leave with all her clients. The new boss, however, Cosima, a sort of Cruella Deville character, will do anything to stop her. But Tess has a very strong relationship with Dorothy, a quirky and very successful children’s book writer who has sworn to follow her at the new agency. It is an understatement to say that things will not go as planned for Tess.

Part mystery and part chick lit, this book has many unexpected twists and turns and is a great summer read.
